The specialized process of Conformation Engineering for foals was developed by Brian Hyodo. His background includes a degree in Systems Design Engineering, followed by a long professional career with IBM before he became a farrier.

His love of horses led him to explore farriery, which then led him to Chris Gregory's Heartland Horseshoeing School, followed by an apprenticeship with Travis Buck.

During his work as a farrier he was constantly looking to assess the internal dynamics of bone growth and project the development path from an engineering perspective.

He quickly found that neither traditional farriery, nor modern veterinary science was able to fully envelop the dynamics at play in the critical early months of a foal's life. That period literally "fell between the cracks" unless the foal's angular deformity was very extreme from the outset.
